The believer is given the PROMISE - "WALK in the
SPIRIT, and ye shall NOT FULFILL the LUST of the FLESH" (Galatians 5:16):
The FLESH is a reference to the "SIN that dwelleth
IN ME ... that is IN MY FLESH" (Romans 7:17-18) and so there is the NEED of DELIVERANCE, i.e. DELIVERANCE FROM "the
BODY of this DEATH" (Romans 7:24)
It is "THROUGH the SPIRIT" that the BELIEVER
WAITS for "the HOPE of RIGHTEOUSNESS by FAITH" (Galatians 5:5)
It is "THROUGH the SPIRIT" (Galatians 5:5)
that the BELIEVER is able to "QUICKEN (MAKE ALIVE)" the "MORTAL (DEATH)" BODY (Romans 8:11)
and, thus, "MORTIFY (PUT TO DEATH) the DEEDS of the BODY" (Romans 8:13)
The REASON for the BELIEVER'S CONFIDENCE in GOD'S PROMISE
(Galatians 5:16) is that the SPIRIT'S DESIRES (being CONTRARY TO the FLESH'S DESIRES)
will SUPPRESS the FLESH'S DESIRES (Galatians 5:17):
To "WALK in the SPIRIT" (Galatians 5:16)
is to FIRST KNOW what it means to be "BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST" (Romans 6:3) and to THEN TRUST that IDENTIFICATION WITH CHRIST" (Romans 6:11)
Thus, POSITIONALLY - the BELIEVER (the "OLD MAN")
has been "CRUCIFIED" WITH CHRIST (Romans 6:6) and, therefore, "FREED FROM SIN" (Romans 6:7)
CONSEQUENTLY, WHAT is TRUE OF CHRIST is ALSO TRUE OF the
BELIEVER (Romans 6:8-10) - therefore, "LIKEWISE RECKON (COUNT) ye also ... to be DEAD
INDEED UNTO SIN, BUT ALIVE UNTO GOD THROUGH ... CHRIST" (Romans 6:11)
Thus, "WALKING" (Galatians 5:16) means TRUSTING (Galatians 5:5 cf.Romans 6:11),
so that the SPIRIT is the ONE WHO IS FIGHTING AND WINNING (Galatians 5:17 cf.Romans 6:12)
and, thus, ENABLING the BELIEVER to "YIELD ... UNTO GOD, as ALIVE FROM THE DEAD, and ... MEMBERS as INSTRUMENTS
OF RIGHTEOUSNESS UNTO GOD" (Romans 6:13)
"The WORKS of the FLESH" (Galatians 5:19-21)
are the expression of a VAIN MIND that is "ALIENATED FROM the LIFE of GOD" (Ephesians 4:17-19) and, thus, "DEAD in TRESPASSES and SINS" (Ephesians 2:1-3)
"The WORKS of the FLESH" (Galatians 5:19-21)
are the ONLY WORKS POSSIBLE FOR the UNBELIEVER who God sees "IN THE FLESH" as OPPOSED TO the BELIEVER
who God sees "IN THE SPIRIT" (Romans 8:8-9 cf. Ephesians 1:13-14)
Paul's REPEATED DECLARATION that "they which do such
things shall NOT INHERIT the KINGDOM of GOD" (Galatians 5:21 cf.I Corinthians 6:9-10)
is NOT in reference to the BELIEVER living UNDER "the DISPENSATION of the GRACE of GOD" (Ephesians 3:2):
"UNDER GRACE" (Romans 6:14) - GOD SEES the BELIEVER as WASHED FROM the FILTHINESS of the FLESH
BY the SPIRIT of GOD (I Corinthians 6:11)
UNDER "the DISPENSATION of the GRACE of GOD"
(Ephesians 3:2):
The BELIEVER is "SEALED WITH that HOLY SPIRIT of
PROMISE ... UNTIL the REDEMPTION of the PURCHASED POSSESSION" (Ephesians 1:13-14), i.e. UNTIL "... the REDEMPTION of OUR BODY" (Romans 8:22-23)
UNDER "the DISPENSATION of the GRACE of GOD"
(Ephesians 3:2):
The BELIEVER CAN "GRIEVE ... the HOLY SPIRIT",
BUT REMAINS "SEALED BY the HOLY SPIRIT UNTIL the DAY of REDEMPTION" (Ephesians 4:30), i.e. "UNTIL the DAY of JESUS CHRIST" (Philippians 1:6)
At the DAY of "HIS GLORIOUS APPEARING" (Titus 2:13 cf.Philippians 3:20) - He "shall CHANGE OUR LOWLY BODY, that it may be FASHIONED LIKE
UNTO HIS GLORIOUS BODY" (Philippians 3:21)
Paul's REPEATED DECLARATION that "they which do such
things shall NOT INHERIT the KINGDOM of GOD" (Galatians 5:21 cf.I Corinthians 6:9-10)
is in reference to those living in "the DAY of WRATH and REVELATION of the RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT of GOD"
(Romans 2:5 cf.Ephesians 5:6;Colossians 3:6):
Those who belong to Christ "HAVE CRUCIFIED the FLESH
with the PASSIONS and LUSTS" (Galatians 5:24):
POSITIONALLY, the BELIEVER by HAVING BEEN "BAPTIZED
INTO" CHRIST'S DEATH (Romans 6:3), is NOW "CRUCIFIED WITH CHRIST" (Galatians 2:20)
POSITIONALLY, this means that GOD ALSO SEES the BELIEVER
as "CRUCIFIED UNTO ... THE WORLD" (Galatians 6:14) - NO LONGER ENSLAVED TO IT (Ephesians 2:1-3), BUT DELIVERED FROM IT (Ephesians 2:4-5)
Therefore, "IF we LIVE IN the SPIRIT" THEN "let
us ALSO WALK IN the SPIRIT" (Galatians 5:25):
DEEDS - in "ALL ... RIGHTEOUSNESS" (Ephesians 5:8-9),
i.e. "the NEW MAN ... CREATED IN RIGHTEOUSNESS and TRUE HOLINESS" (Ephesians 4:24) as OPPOSED TO "the BEHAVIOR OF the OLD MAN ... CORRUPT ACCORDING
TO the DECEITFUL LUSTS" (Ephesians 4:22)
