The Faith of Moses and Israel -
Overcoming the Fear of Man (Hebrews 11:28)
(Class Notes)
A preserving faithconnected with birth and associated
with others
"By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three
months of his parents ..."(Hebrews 11:23)
"By faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling
of the blood, lest He that destroyed the first born should touch them" (Hebrews 11:28)
The Greek verb tense of the collective act of faith
in the Passover is the Perfect (a completed action with on-going results), as opposed to the Aorist (simple past
tense) used of Moses' individual acts of faith
Like the sacrifice of Isaac (Hebrews 11:17), the Passover sacrifice typifies the True sacrifice which abides forever (Hebrews 10:12,14)
The LXX translates "keep the passover" (Exodus 12:47-48) as "to do the passover",
which is more true to the meaning of the context, "Thus did all the children of Israel; as the Lord commanded
Moses and Aaron, so did they" (Exodus 12:50)
Moses and Israel both heard the spoken Word of God
concerning the Passover and the sprinkling of blood (Exodus 12:1-20)
"And the Lord spake unto Moses ... saying ... speak
ye unto all the congregation of Israel" (Exodus 12:1-3)
"... it is the Lord's Passover. For I will pass
through the Land ... and when I see the blood, I will pass over you ..." (Exodus 12:11-13)
The sprinkling (Greek, proschusis) of blood (Hebrews 11:28) is the only occurrence
of the Greek word in the NT, because of the emphasis of faith connected with redemption
The blood of sprinkling (Greek, rhantismos; Hebrews 12:24)
and all other references to sprinkling (Greek, rhantizo or rhantismos) in Hebrews, speak of the
sanctifying faith of those already redeemed
